History of Bhadra Fort

Bhadra Fort was built in 1411 by Ahmad Shah I, the founder of the city of Ahmedabad. It was named after the Bhadrakali temple found within the premises. It was said that the goddess of wealth visited here and blessed the sultan that the city would always be prosperous. Later, it served as a temple. In 1817, the British captured this fort and used it as a prison until independence. A clock tower was installed here in the year 1878, which had a kerosene lamp for lighting at night. Later in 1915, they replaced it with an electric lamp. On the eastern side of the fort lies a Teen Darwaza, which is a royal gateway to the Maidan Shah. It was an open area filled with palm trees, where the royal games and processions took place.
