Located 25km from Wayanad, Edakkal Caves are one of the oldest human settlements ever discovered. It is the perfect spot for trekking and adventure lovers. This place is famous for its mystical rock formations and engravings, which date back to the Stone Age.
The Edakkal Caves are not really caves, but rather a rock formation where a boulder is wedged between two other boulders. The name “Edakkal” itself means “Stone in between” in the Malayalam language. You need to trek a short distance from the parking to reach the ticket counter.
On the way to Edakkal Caves, you can find small and big shops that sell handicrafts. A 12D theatre is available within the premises. You need to climb around 300 steps to reach the caves.
The Edakkal Caves consist of two caves. The first one has a spring that never dries up, even during the hottest summers. From the first cave, you have to climb a little higher to enjoy the beautiful viewpoint. In the second cave, you can find numerous inscriptions.

Edakkal Caves History
The pictorial engravings in the Edakkal Caves are quite old, dating back to the Stone Age. Although it belonged to early civilisation, it was discovered in 1895 by Fred Fawcett, a police officer from the British East India Company.
