Botanical Garden Pondicherry History
The Botanical Garden Pondicherry was built by the French in 1826. It was designed to identify plants suitable for adapting to the climatic conditions of Pondicherry. There were nearly 800 to 900 species grown in that area. In 1838, Mr. S.G. Perrottet, an eminent botanist, took charge of this place and planted new and rare species here. Later, numerous botanists added several new species here. After 1954, the responsibility was handed over to the agricultural department.
