Adalaj Stepwell, also known as Rudabai Stepwell, is situated in Adalaj, near Gandhinagar city, Gujarat. It is about 19 km from Ahmedabad. The Adalaj stepwell is believed to have been built by Rani Rudadevi in 1499 in memory of her husband Veer Singh.
During this time due to the shortage of water, the people of Dendai Desh were dependent on rain water for which the ruler decided to build a deep well. But before the work could be completed the Dandai Desh was attacked by a Muslim ruler, Mohammed Begda who killed Veer Singh.
About Adalaj Ni Vav
There are 3 entrances to the Adalaj Stepwell that meet at the underground. The platform rests on 16 pillars and their corners have shrines carved into them. There are a total of 5 floors in Adalaj, each floor having deities and various carvings. Villagers used this well to fill water and offer prayers to the deities. Due to the architecture of the stepwell, the place below remains cooler. There are decorative sculptures of mythological and rural motifs all over the walls. Among them are the Kalp vriksha, a tree of life carved from a single slab of stone, and Ami khumbor, a jar that holds the water of life.
Locals also believe that the Navgrahs built on the fifth floor protect the monument from evil spirits.
