About Bharati Park, Puducherry
The Aayi Mandapam in this park was built during the French colonial period to honour a woman named Aayi. During the reign of Krishnadevaraya, Aayi was a devadasi who lived in Villianur. When the king visited Villianur, he was amazed by the beauty of a particular house there. The people informed him that the house belonged to Aayi. Later, an order was issued to demolish her house and build a water tank for the welfare of the people. Although Aayi initially pleaded, she eventually agreed to sacrifice her house for this purpose. However, she was not honoured or praised during that time.
During the French colonial period, Puducherry faced severe water scarcity. The governor wrote a letter to Napoleon III, who then sent a senior engineer to investigate the issue. The engineer searched for fresh water sources and discovered Aayikulam. Canals and wells were constructed, and water was successfully brought to Puducherry. After learning about Aayi’s sacrifice, Napoleon ordered the construction of the Aayi Mandapam in her memory. This area served as a parade ground for the French until 1940. In 1950, the Puducherry government developed the park here. Later, it was renovated in 2006.
